- TO MAKE IT EASIER TO WIN, WE ALWAYS START OUT WITH A NEW (ORDERED) DECK, THEN
- SHUFFLE IT EXACTLY 7 TIMES AND CUT IT, WITH AT LEAST 5 CARDS IN EACH PACKET.
- THIS INSURES THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SEQUENTIAL RUNS IN THE DECK.

- FOR THE HIGH ROLLERS, WE PROVIDE THE OPTION TO START WITH A COMPLETELY RANDOM

- FIRST, A RESERVE OF 13 CARDS IS CREATED BY THE COMPUTER AND PUT AT THE TOP
- LEFT OF THE SCREEN. IN DEALING THE RESERVE, ANY ACES THAT TURN UP ARE PLACED
- IN A ROW AT THE RIGHT OF THE RESERVE. IF NO ACE TURNED UP IN DEALING THE
- RESERVE, ONE ACE IS REMOVED FROM THE DECK AND USED.

- TO PLAY: TURN UP CARDS FROM THE DECK ONE AT A TIME, AND TRY TO BUILD THE

- HAPPENED TO THE 8 ACES? THEY ARE DISCARDED DURING PLAY AND DON'T COUNT FOR
- ANYTHING!

- PLAY. A CARD FROM THE TABLEAU MAY BE PLAYED ON A FOUNDATION PILE, BUT ONLY IF
- THE SPACE IT CREATES IN THE TABLEAU CAN IMMEDIATELY BE FILLED BY A TWO,
- THREE, OR FOUR (FOUNDATION CARD), WHICHEVER CORRESPONDS TO THE ROW IN QUESTION.
- THE CARD TO FILL THE SPACE MUST COME FROM THE RESERVE, OR FROM ANOTHER

- CYCLICAL EXCHANGE. A 2, 3, AND 4 MAY BE CYCICALLY EXCHANGED AT THE SAME TIME
- IF IT COMES OUT WITH EACH IN ITS PROPER ROW TOO.

- REPLENISHING THE RESERVE. WHEN A CARD IS PLAYED FROM THE RESERVE, ITS
- SPACE IS NOT REPLENISHED. WHEN THE PLAYER IS READY, HE MAY DEAL ANOTHER
- ROW OF 8 CARDS ON THE RESERVE AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS TRADITIONAL TO
- FINISH THE GAME WITHOUT A REDEAL.

- ACES. ACES ARE DEAD CARDS, AND IF FOUND IN THE TABLEAU THEY MAY BE DISCARDED,
- BUT ONLY IF THEIR SPACES ARE FILLED LIKE ANYTHING ELSE. IF AN ACE IS DEALT TO
- THE RESERVE IT IS IMMEDIATELY DISCARDED BY THE COMPUTER AND THE SPACE LEFT IN
- THE RESERVE UNFILLED.

- HINTS. THE BIG NO-NO IS BURYING FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE RESERVE. TRY TO MAKE
- SPACES IN THE TABLEAU AND GET THOSE FOUNDATION CARDS OFF OF THEIR TRAPPED
- BROTHERS!

- IT'S A BEGINNER'S MISTAKE TO EXCHANGE FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE TABLEAU FOR NO
- REASON. YOU MIGHT WANT TO LEAVE A FOUNDATION CARD IN THE WRONG ROW OF THE
- TABLEAU IF THAT ROW IS NOT RICH IN SPACE-MAKING POSSIBILITIES, TO AWAIT A
- FOUNDATION CARD IN THE RESERVE TO TAKE ITS PLACE. BUT A CYCLICAL EXCHANGE MAY
- BE WARRANTED TO AVOID BURYING A LOW CARD SUCH AS A 5 THRU 7.

- A REVERSE BLOCK, THAT IS, A HIGHER CARD OVER A LOWER CARD OF THE SAME SUIT,
- NEEDED FOR THE SAME FOUNDATION (A MULTIPLE OF 3 APART IN RANK), IS FATAL
- UNLESS THE UPPER CARD CAN BE PLAYED ON A FOUNDATION TO FREE THE LOWER CARD.
- BUT REMEMBER THE DOUBLE DECK! EACH CARD HAS A DUPLICATE, SO YOU MUST MENTALLY
- TAG ALL "FIRST-PLAY" CARDS AMONG THE DUPLICATES OR BLOCK A WIN INADVERTENTLY.
- A DOUBLE REVERSE BLOCK IS ALWAYS FATAL.

- END (FACE) CARDS SHOULD NOT BE BUILT ON FOUNDATIONS UNTIL THE LAST CARD IS
- DEALT, EXCEPT TO UNTANGLE A REVERSAL AS ABOVE. DITTO FOR PRE-END CARDS (8S,
- 9S, AND 10S) WHICH HAVE THE REQUIRED END CARD LYING IN THE RESERVE COVERING
- NO NEEDED CARD. TAKE MENTAL NOTE OF RESERVE PILES THAT ARE "NON-DANGEROUS",
- FOR EXAMPLE, ALL FACE CARDS OR ALL CARDS THAT CAN BE PLAYED ON THE SAME
- FOUNDATION IN SEQUENCE. A PRE-END CARD IS HAZARDOUS TO BUILD IF ITS END CARD
- IS STILL UNDEALT.

- B BUILD A CARD ONTO THE FOUNDATIONS. A CURSOR WILL APPEAR AND EACH
- TIME YOU HIT THE SPACE BAR IT WILL CYCLE TO THE NEXT CARD THAT CAN
- BE PLAYED. WHEN YOU REACH THE CARD YOU WANT, HIT THE ENTER KEY.
- IF THERE IS ONLY 1 POSSIBLE CARD THAT CAN BE BUILT, IT IS AUTOMATIC.
- USE THIS ALSO IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF AN ACE IN THE TABLEAU.
- AFTER THE CARD IS BUILT ONTO THE FOUNDATION, THE CURSOR APPEARS AGAIN
- TO SELECT THE CARD TO FILL THE SPACE WITH; HIT SPACE BAR TO SELECT,
- THEN ENTER TO PLAY.
- E EXCHANGE LONE FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE TABLEAU. IF THERE IS ONLY ONE
- POSSIBILITY THE COMPUTER WILL DO IT AUTOMATICALLY ELSE A CURSOR
- WILL APPEAR FOR SELECTION.

- 3. SALIC LAW

- INITIAL TABLEAU. THE COMPUTER DEALS AN INITIAL TABLEAU BY REMOVING ONE
- KING FROM THE DECK AND USING IT TO FOUND PILE #1 AT THE LEFT. DURING PLAY THE
- CARDS ARE DEALT ON THAT PILE, OVERLAPPING DOWN FACE UP, UNTIL THE NEXT
- KING IS REACHED. IT IS USED TO FOUND PILE #2, AND SO ON, UNTIL THE WHOLE
- DECK HAS BEEN DEALT AND 8 PILES CREATED, EACH OF PROBABLY DIFFERENT SIZES.

- DURING THE DEAL ALL ACES AND QUEENS ARE AUTOMATICALLY HELD OUT, THE ACES BEING
- USED TO FOUND THE 8 FOUNDATION PILES. THE QUEENS HAVE NO USE AND ARE DISCARDED
- (SOMETIMES DISPLAYED FOR EFFECT). FOUNDATIONS ARE BUILT UP FROM ACES TO
- JACKS REGARDLESS OF SUITS.

- PLAY. THE TOP CARD OF EACH TABLEAU PILE IS AVAILABLE FOR BUILDING TO A
- FOUNDATION, DURING THE DEAL AS WELL AS AFTER. A BARE KING IS THE SAME AS A
- SPACE AND ANY AVAILABLE CARD MAY BE MOVED TO IT, BUT ONLY AFTER THE DEAL IS
